URINARY CALCULI

(Water Belly)

Urinary calculi or “water belly” is a metabolic disease referring to phosphate salt deposits lodged in the urinary tract. Urinary calculi accounts for 13% of all death losses from nutritional deficiency diseases and ailments. These salt deposits in the urinary tract may block the flow of urine, particularly in male cattle and sheep. Prolonged blockage of the urinary tract typically results in the rupture of the urinary bladder or urethra, releasing urine into the surrounding tissues. Insufficient water intake can also contribute to the problem, causing the urine to become more concentrated, thus making the formation of stones more likely.

Prevention of urinary calculi is accomplished by increasing water intake and acidifying the urine. This entails providing an ample amount of water along with the use of ammonium chloride or other acid forming salts to acidify the urine and prevent the formation of calculi (stones). *Certain Wagon Master Liquid Feeds contain a significant amount of ammonium chloride and is also very palatable, unlike most other products that contain ammonium chloride. Wagon Master Feed should be an integral part of an effective urinary calculi prevention program.

Grass Tetany

Grass Tetany is a nutritional or metabolic disorder characterized by low blood magnesium. Lush, cool season forages are high in potassium and low in magnesium and sodium. These factors together are the primary cause of Grass Tetany. High levels of potassium decrease rumen absorption of magnesium. Low rumen sodium results in an even greater build-up of rumen potassium. An additional factor resulting in increased levels of Grass Tetany are low energy diets.

*Certain Wagon Master Liquid Feeds supply adequate levels of sodium to result in decreased rumen potassium levels. Energy supplementation is also increased. Minerals containing typical levels of magnesium as opposed to the 12 to 14% levels often contained in minerals sold for Tetany prevention can be used. The higher levels often result in poor mineral intake and Grass Tetany may still occur. Minerals containing lower levels of magnesium are much more readily consumed. Wagon Master should be an integral part of an effective Grass Tetany control program.

Why do I need to feed a supplement?

At certain times of the year, forages have a nutrient imbalance and lack the proper protein and energy. The ingredients we use in our Wagon Master Supplements will help balance the protein and energy of the total diet by providing a variety of nitrogen and energy sources that will improve rumen forage microbes as forage quality decreases. Especially when cows calve, their needs for the proper protein and energy are essential to their health. Cows are trying to breed back while calves in nursing are making the need for a good balanced supplement even more important.

Supplementing Cattle on Poor Quality Forages

A good supplement should supply the rumen a degradable protein source that will enhance mi-crobial growth and improve digestion. It should also provide the proper carbohydrates to resolve any carbon deficiency and ensure a sufficient supply of phosphorus and sulfur. A good balanced supplement should eliminate any imbalances that may exist in the protein to energy ration of the diet. A good liquid supplement is available to the animals 24-7 unlike other forms of supplement that are only fed once a day or every other day.

Frequently Asked Questions

• Will Wagon Master attract flies?

No. Wagon Master contains ingredients that are not attractive to flies.

• Will Wagon Master supplements freeze?

Not under normal conditions due to the acidity of the product. In extremely cold conditions pumping will be more difficult due to the viscosity.

• Should a dry mineral mix be fed in conjunction with Wagon Master Feeds?

Yes. A good mineral mix containing calcium, phosphorus, salt and trace minerals should be fed free choice in conjunction with Wagon Master Supplements. A mineral mix fed free choice will help correct mineral variances in roughage composition thereby controlling consumption of the liquid supplement.

• Can Wagon Master be fed to young calves?

Yes. And the calf will benefit. Even though a very young calf may not have a functioning rumen it can utilize the energy, natural protein and carbohydrates found in the formula. Rumen activity in a young calf is indicated when the calf consumes roughage and chews its cud. When this occurs the calf can utilize non-protein nitrogen.

• Why is there fat in Wagon Master Feeds?

Fat has 2.25 times more energy than carbohydrates, making it an excellent source of energy.

• Does Wagon Master contain Animal Fat?

No. We use only vegetable oil and there are no problems with rancidity as with animal fat.

• Can Wagon Master be fed to Sheep, Goats, Bison, Deer?

Yes. Wagon Master has supplements that can be fed free choice or mixed into rations of any ruminant.

• I have been told, cattle consume more grass when they are fed liquid supplements. Will Wagon Master make my cattle eat more?

Cattle that are being fed Wagon Master will eat larger quantities of roughage, particularly if it is of low quality. When Wagon Master is fed, the deficiencies in roughage are corrected so that cattle have a more balanced diet. Then, they are able to utilize the roughage better and will consume more of it.

• How much will my animal consume daily?

Depending on the size of the animal and condition of roughage consumption will vary from 1-7 lbs per head per day.
